About the Photographer
Born and based in a small village in northern Portugal, Antonio Coelho is a self-taught photographer and electrical engineer whose interest in visual art began with painting at an early age. His engagement with photography started in 2010 after a trip to Cuba, where he began capturing images that sparked a deeper exploration of the medium.
Initially working with analogue equipment—particularly vintage and medium-format cameras—Coelho later transitioned to digital photography in 2015, developing skills in both image-making and digital post-processing. His work spans still life, landscape, conceptual photography, and architecture, often combining technical precision with a reflective visual approach.
Antonio Coelho has received extensive international recognition since winning his first major award at the Xposure Festival in Sharjah in 2017. His accolades include multiple national and international awards such as the Portugal National Award at the Sony World Photography Awards (2018 and 2020), Gold awards at WPE, IPA, PX3, BIFA, MIFA, and Budapest International Photo Awards, as well as top distinctions at OneEyeland, Architecture MasterPrize, and the Societies of Photographers in the UK. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Xposure Festival, and published in Portuguese and international magazines such as Practical Photographer and Digital Photographer.
