About the Photographer
Maria Castro is a multidisciplinary artist working across sound design, music, photography, and film. Born in Lisbon and educated in the UK, she holds a BMus (2000) and a PhD in Sound Design for the Moving Image (2006) from Royal Holloway, University of London. Now based in France, her practice focuses on the interplay between sound and image, rooted in early work in photography.
Her photography has earned international recognition, including Gold and Bronze awards at the 2025 ReFocus Awards, and features in publications such as Urbanvoid Magazine, the Mira Mobile Prize Catalogue, and the poetry book {corps solide}.
Maria Castro has exhibited widely in Europe and beyond, from Mira Galerias in Porto and Leica Tour Paris to galleries in Tokyo, London, Milan, and Rome. Her multimedia and sound installations have been presented internationally, and her film-related work has screened at festivals including Berlinale Talent Campus, Edinburgh, Fantasporto, IndieLisboa, and many others.
